Dahlia Bakery
Dahlia Bakery's doughnuts are square shaped, almost like beignets, but much lighter. They are super light and tossed in cinnamon and sugar. They make them fresh to order, but be patient. Pretty soon they will come around the corner with a little white bag. Give it a shake and devour. They are served with house made jam or compotes, and vanilla mascarpone. OMG the vanilla mascarpone is to die for. I don't know if the doughnuts are really that phenomenal, or if they are just a tool to consume the vanilla mascarpone? Mascarpone is a cheese, similar to cream cheese, but lighter and not sour at all. Maybe it's somewhere between cream cheese and Creme Fraiche? It's good. It melts into the hot doughnut. The seasonal fruit compotes are always good. My favorite one is the huckleberry compote. I crave this stuff!
Other goodies - The famous Coconut Cream Pie can be purchased, either a full pie, a tart size, or a mini pie. All are outstanding of course! One staple I pick up rather frequently is the Dahlia House Loaf - This is the bread they serve at the Palace Kitchen - it's rustic, crusty on the outside, and soft and moist inside. A really perfect loaf of bread. Croissants, cookies, Lola spreads. All of these things can be found at the Dahlia Bakery to devour in the privacy of your own home, or they are really great for picnics. Also, breakfast sandwiches which are extremely good and inexpensive. You really can't go wrong with anything you try here!
I am looking forward to the upcoming Dahlia Bakery cookbook - I'd love to have some of these recipes in my arsenal! Again, Tom Douglas does it right. Thank you TD!
